3 places to visit around Barcelona during your stay!

Barcelona is a city that has a lot to offer. You have a lot of culture, architecture and activities to fill days. But are you sometimes tired of the hustle and bustle just like me and do you love nature? Then I have selected a few places just outside Barcelona where you can relax and discover the Spanish culture.

1. Sitges

Sitges is about 30 kilometers from Barcelona. The small town is very popular among the Barcelona urban population for a weekend visit. Sitges has retained its historic but small center, making it one of the most beautiful places on the Spanish coast. In Sitges you can enjoy the delicious tapas, the great weather and the beach, the advantage of Sitges is that even in november it is nice to go here, you avoid the mass tourism that is here in the summer. You can easily reach Sitges by train.

(P.s. the sunset in Sitges is unbelievable, so enjoy 😉)

2. Montserrat

Montserrat is a 720 meters high mountain in Catalonia. According to sources, this is the most important and mysterious mountain in Catalonia. It is located about 50 km northwest of Barcelona. On the mountain, the sanctuary and the Benedictine monastery of Montserrat are located. It is also possible to stay overnight in a hotel on the mountain. Every year, the monastery and the mountain in general attract many tourists and climbers.

What I like most about this place is that it is very calm en relaxing to climb en walk through the beautiful nature. Also, a quick tip, when you are with a big group you can schedule a nice lunch at a farm located on the mountain.

3. Gerona

And last but not least, Gerona. Gerona is located around 102 km outside Barcelona, and yes I know what you are thinking right now “102 km that’s too far!”. Well yes, it is far, but it will take you only around 1 hour to get there by train from Barcelona station, so definitely worth the try if you ask me.

It is majestically situated on a hill, at the foot of the Riu Onyar River. Romans, Jews and Moors have used it to determine the local culture and structure. Some highlights not to be missed:

1. Take a walk on the Pont de Pedra or ‘stone bridge’, for the most famous picture of the typical postcards of Girona: the pastel-coloured houses along the river.

2. The Cathedral of Girona, built between the 11th and 18th centuries. The Plaça de la Catedral is also a real picture, with a huge staircase leading up to it. Its structure is interesting because of its many influences: from Baroque to Romanesque and Gothic.

3. Also, nice to know in this context: the 6th season of Game of Thrones was filmed here! And by the way also a piece from the dark film Perfume.

So now you have some places to visit outside Barcelona. Do you want to book your stay in the capital city of Catalonia? Then visit our website below and Enjoy! 🙂
