La Mercè is a giant free festival in Barcelona, with many activities and events happening in the streets. This festival is held in honor of the patron saint la Mercè, the Virgin of Mercy. This offical public holiday event gives a great insight of the Catalan culture, because Barcelona is the capital city of Catalonia. Fun fact: it is the largest festival of Barcelona!
Here you will find some events during the festival that you definitely do not want to miss:
Firework special – Platja de la Barceloneta – at 10 PM. This is a show with spectacular propopals lighting up the sky. The event invites all of us to have a look at the impressive and breathtaking light show while enjoy being on the beach.
The Correfoc – via Laietana – 6.30 PM (children) 7.45 PM (adults). This is the highlight of the La Mercè festival with one show for children and one show for adults. The streets will be filled with fireworks and explosions. TIP! We highly recommend you to wear protective clothes and glasses because of the fire spitting around. By doing this, you will enjoy the happening without having to worry.
Falcons de Barcelona i Falcons de Vilanova – Plaça Sant Jaume – 11 AM. This is an event where humans will create spectacular buildings. By using special techniques they climb on each other to make spectacular figures that are linked to the most popular Catalan traditions. Curious which kind of figures they are gonna create this time? Make sure to have a look!
Concert extraordinari de les festes de la Mercè – Palau de la Generalitat – 9 PM. During this concert Anna maria Reverte rings the 49 bells of the Generalitat Carillon by playing a selection of different types of music such as Bach and Queen. To be part of this great concert you have to register before the 20th of September by calling 012 or you can enjoy the concert from the streets of the Gothic Quarter without any register!
The firework end show – Avinguda Reina Maria Cristina – 10 PM. The annual festival is over, but the firework endshow may not be forgotten! This year the explosions and fireworks will brightly color the sky. This year the show will invite Beirut, so you will hear music related songs to this city but also Barcelona Jazz and a section of the best music featured at la Mercè 2019.
